We visited the Wetland Centre at Barnes (not far from the
Hammersmith bridge for us East Londoners). This newish
nature reserve is a haven for twichers (bird watchers). There are
100 acres of lakes, marshes, ponds, read beds, and a discovery
centre; there are multi storey hides and interactive centres. The
kids had a wonderful time in the pond dipping areas, catching
newts, snails, shrimps and dragonfly lava. From the hides (with
the naked eye) we saw Lapwings, Redshank, Heron and an
array of Ducks and Geese. Francesca enjoyed helping with the
feeding of the enclosed birds. The restaurant had a good
selection and is enhanced when, eating outside, when the
marsh frogs start their chorus. We went by car but buses do stop
at the centre. The site may be a little manicured for some
peoples tastes, but is safe for children. Entrance is £6.75 for
adults with under 5's free, Proceeds go to a conservation project
worth supporting and there is not much like this around London
