Posted by tobias hill Please excuse me if I'm using this community forum for non-resident purposes. My name's Tobias Hill, I'm a writer (translation: not a weekdays-only city worker) and my girlfriend and I just spent the day looking at a place for sale in Durant St. May I just say you have a very special neighbourhood. I've now bought the book, visited the website and (probably) seen the movie. We would very much like to move in, but a JHE house is at the very limit of our finances (this is what comes of trying to be a writer). The house for sale on Durant St also needs a lot of work. So I was wondering if anyone could answer any of the following: * There is damp. I understand there is damp. I know about the watercress. But how bad is it? If we do move in, we'll be poor as church mice: will we be damp church mice as well? * There are some interesting cracks. I don't know enough to know if they're still moving. I know about the fronts being taken off Durant Street ten years ago. I also know the creche was never built on Jesus Green because there was supposed to be subsidence. Part of me says subsidence shmubsidence, but I can't afford to be very wrong on this. Is there still movement, and should I be worried about it? * What are the schools like? If we were to move in, and do the house up, we'd want to stick around. I've read somewhere here that Columbia Primary is really good; what about secondaries? * And lastly, if we were to move in, can anyone recommend someone to take on the uncarpeting, unwallpapering, unwalling and joisting, and doing-something-about-the-cracking which will need to be done? The name people seem to be recommending is David Podge. Is he the one? Again, I am sorry that this isn't exactly yet a residential issue. But we would love to be residents, and appreciate any help with the above. Thanks,
