Times Youth Music Scholarship
Following the success of the inaugural competition last year, the Ulladulla Milton Lions Club, in conjunction with The Ulladulla Milton Times, will again offer a musical scholarship to a local youth. The $2,000 scholarship will be given on a competitive basis and is available for performers, either instrumentalists or singers, who are 18 years old or younger on Australia Day, January 26.
The first selection step in the competition will be auditions which will be conducted in early December, 2008. Those candidates who are selected from these auditions will be invited to perform in the competition final to take place on stage at the Australia Day Celebrations at the Mollymook Beach Reserve in January, 2009.
The Australia Day performances will be judged with the winner being presented with the scholarship cheque on stage at the completion of the day’s event. Judging for the competition will be provided by independent experts with credibility in the music/entertainment business.
The scholarship is specifically designed to support local youth so, eligibility to enter the competition for the award will be restricted to performers who live in the Ulladulla Milton district. For the purpose of the competition the northern boundary of the district would include but end at Bendalong and the southern boundary would include but end at East Lynne.
It is open to either individual performers or a group of performers. However, a group of performers would have to share the $2,000 prize. All performers who reach the final of the contest and perform on stage at the Australia Day celebrations will be given a Certificate of Performance suitable for inclusion in their personal portfolio.
The winner of the inaugural scholarship, Nat Lizak, recommends the competition to all aspiring young musicians. She said she enjoyed the experience which has proven invaluable to her in all aspects of life. Nat continues to play the violin and guitar in a band organised by her Dad and hopes that music will continue to play a big part in her future.
Application forms for the Scholarship are now available from the following outlets: at Incognito Costume Hire at the corner of Princes Highway and St Vincent Street; on the internet at www.ulladulla.info or by approaching the music staff at schools within the district. Further information on the scholarship is available from Allan McDonald of the Lions’ Club on 0414 582 417.
