New Years Eve will be quieter in the beer garden of the Cottesloe Beach Hotel this year. Last year, the hotel put on a live band without permission, which earned it a $3,000 fine and council court costs of $2,900. The noise volume was clocked at 86 decibels (they're allowed 70 db) and residents complained bitterly that the band rattled their windows. This year, the hotel asked permission for a dj. The council agreed that without the event, there'd be an extra 2,000 people wandering the area. They allowed the volume to be 90 db until 11.30 pm, then down to 85db, and then 80 db after midnight.
