Biggest thing we found in Iceland was that the fact that the summer sun never actually sets it makes your body clock go all kind of wonky (it really is daylight at 3 a.m.)... soooo...when one is out adventuring one doesn't really think about what time it is and therefore you find you are looking for food at about 10:00 p.m. or later and finding most eating establishments are closed. Not a good thing...so luckily we learned to adjust and usually did a big meal mid-day to compensate.
Ok...will confess right up front -- I ate Rudolph.
I had an excellent Haddock up in Husavik; the reindeer in Egilstaddir was just incredible (our best meal of the trip); and lots of soup with really great bread. We also ate a lot of excellent pizza, one pretty good hot dog, and lots of snacks. We never did encounter the fermented shark (Hákarl) nor did we find any Puffin (since it's nesting season). Almost all of the food we found was locally grown and organic -- it really was good!
Basically we were there 6 days and we drove the entire "ring" of Iceland (and when they say "road" I would use an incredibly broad interpretation of that word that includes gravel/dirt roads over high mountains). We went white-water rafting on a glacier river; took a pony trek on Icelandic horses; we visited the iceberg lagoon near Hofn; we hiked through a lava field to get to a volcano; and went whale watching way out in a bay off the Arctic Ocean. It really was an amazing trip and we didn't have 10 minutes to sit still! All this on top of a few museums; some shopping; a LOT of driving; and occasional roadside photo ops. (I came home with 2 new wool sweaters and a beautiful wool blanket.)
So all that said -- single most incredible spot on the trip (A MUST FOR ANY TRIP TO ICELAND) was the Blue Lagoon Spa! We were there on Tuesday night -- geothermically heated pools -- OMG! Was fantastic. You seriously never want to leave!
I'll be posting photos this weekend and will try and put a few up to share! Here's a little appetizer though...
