i ended up booking via Hotwire. For the weekend I'll be there (Feb 7-9), I got a 3 star hotel in midtown for $92/night (which, with taxes and fees, bumps to $111/night).

Well, in NoCal, flip-flops are considered acceptable footwear for 10 of the 12 months. Even to the point that it's possible to wear a nice pair to a dressy event 
In other words, I don't think I really own much that would be considered "good" or "warm." I have a pair or two of hiking boots (I don't spend all my time in flip flops--certainly not when I'm camping) so maybe I'll pack a pair of those.
So, I am still freaked out by the possibility of snow, but I'll deal. Maybe I'll have enough room in my carry-on for some decent California weather. Today it is 62*F and sunny, with 71* projected for tomorrow, Monday, and Tuesday.
