As long as you have fun collecting I mean really enjoying models, I don't see a single reason why to stop collecting.
The heirs? It is MY hobby and I am the one having fun with my models and it is MY decision what to spend my money for. Well honestly I shoud add - I do not have children but 2 nieces only, which makes it easier for me ;-)
Today I got 8 super wonderful models made by Hugh Thomas - these are so super, wonderful ... (run out of superlatives)! Only collectors can understand the exitement and pleasure I feel right now, watching these gems. Why to dispense with this feeling? No way!
So stopping to collect for any other reason than the sad one, you can not aford them any longer, isn't a reason for me at all. So as long as I can aford it, I will definately enlarge my collection till my very last day in this world - hope in the other one scale ships are known as well ;-))
