I agree! Never!
At least as long as it still gives you pleasure.
I have over 5000 and have slowed down because I don't have room to display them well.
But I still, at 69, spend time converting, scratch building, and painting as well as purchasing. I don't make models as nice as some that are featured here, and my painting ranges from very good to absolutely terrible. None of that detracts from the hours of enjoyment I get from my collection.
I will be taking pictures of them and posting them in the coming year if I can.

: Hi Ulrich
: You must never stop collecting. To stop
: collecting is like stopping the love and
: heart of the hobby. 12 years ago I almost
: stoped collecting when, due to an accident I
: got a new knee and again 3 years ago, due to
: iron, I had to get a new liver.
: With semi retirement at 60; I have increased
: my purchases over the last 3 years and
: intend to keep going as long as I feel fit
: as I do now.
: As for what will happen to the models: now
: almost 730 (over 1.4 inches). I am educating
: my adult offspring as to the sales value of
: the models. I keep a record.
: Keep collecting,
: Vincent

: There comes a time when you have to start to
: number your feathers like my favorite
: rooster Foghorn Leghorn .
:
: When you get to be close to 75, collecting
: more models does not make a lot of sense
: unless you think you live forever or someone
: close really wants them after you are gone.
: They certainly are not and never will be the
: great investment I told my wife and children
: about. Many will end up in some remote
: auction for $5 or less apiece, as experience
: shows over and over again, even I you got
: one for an idiotic bargain at $600.
:
: So when is it time for a collector to stop,
: reverse the engines, and retire? This is
: not a morbid thought, but there are no easy
: answers.
