Logically the time to stop is well before you die so that you can gradually dispose of what you have for the best return possible. But realistically, I think that the time to stop is simply when you have no desire to acquire more, and I think for some that may not occur until death. For others, they naturally feel less and less inclined to acquire more at a time when they feel they no longer need it or want more. When that happens, you'll just feel it.
My father-in-law, who is almost 92, just leased a new car on a three year lease. Why? He didn't need it, he just wanted one. But in a way, I think it somehow helps to make him believe he'll still be around in three years.
