Painting

Hello everyone! I am new to this Hobby and I have recently bought a few ships. I mostly like old 1940-50's freighters. My question about painting is how do you paint the waterline on a ship? I am going to try when I get my models and am really worried about getting it straight. Also I am trying to collect Canadian Pacific Ships and their funnel has six squares - 3 red and 3 white. Any tips on how to paint this on a funnel. Appreciate any tips or advice. Thank you very much Jim Durning Canada
