not the fact that there aren't many younger people in this hobby, but the fact that there aren't too many younger producers in this hobby! We've lost a few more producers in 2009. George says that more are on the way out. Where are we going to be in, say, 5 years? Maybe 5-10 manufactureresleft? Low priced cruise ships don't interet me very much and neither do high priced cruise ships. I don't have any. I do like interesting ships that display some color. I think the Royal Navy China Station ships, or the Spanish Civil War ships with national turret markings, etc. It's time for me to start making my own models anyway. I'm retired, can only afford a model every once in awhile, if I see one on sale that interests me or I get an eBay bargin (like 8 models for $10.00 including a Neptun Warspite). Sorry for the long post. The bottom line I think is that we need new younger producers and new blood in the collector areana if this hobby is going to last IMHO.

: Good points, but consider this possibility: A
: lot of the people who go on cruises have no
: more interest in the ships themselves than
: they would in, say, a Hilton Hotel. For
: them, they are just buildings that float
: and move. So they may view the models as
: just overly expensive souvenirs. Even a
: number of us dedicated ship collectors find
: these ships to be about as attractive as our
: local Walmart stores. So even we won't buy
: the models. Certainly there is a dedicated
: core of cruise ship fans, but many of these
: folks know where to get the models.

: It seems to me that many of the
: "younger" collectors like merchant
: ships and modern cruise liners. Ships that
: they tend to have some interaction with. If
: there is anyway to somehow turn on to the
: models a small percentage of the 10 million
: people that take a cruise, I think that you
: could see some growth. The Dragon Waves
: models were an interesting start, and had
: they been available on board at the $45.00
: price point that is widely seen now, they
: might have been pretty popular. But Dragon
: only sold one model, of only two sister
: ships (funny as the class of ships has four
: Carnivals: Spirit, Pride, Miracle and
: Legend, and a further two Costas: Atlantica
: and Mediterranea). I had some hopes for
: Cruise Liner Models, but they have done
: nothing but disapoint unfortunately.
: Scherbak's models are incredible, but
: getting very pricey as well.
