It seems to me that many of the "younger" collectors like merchant ships and modern cruise liners. Ships that they tend to have some interaction with. If there is anyway to somehow turn on to the models a small percentage of the 10 million people that take a cruise, I think that you could see some growth. The Dragon Waves models were an interesting start, and had they been available on board at the $45.00 price point that is widely seen now, they might have been pretty popular. But Dragon only sold one model, of only two sister ships (funny as the class of ships has four Carnivals: Spirit, Pride, Miracle and Legend, and a further two Costas: Atlantica and Mediterranea). I had some hopes for Cruise Liner Models, but they have done nothing but disapoint unfortunately. Scherbak's models are incredible, but getting very pricey as well.
