the justification - in my view - yours might differ - is that items of heritage should be preserved. This is particualry important in what is still a relatively young country such as the US. For example, how many old structures of historical or cultural significance are there in the US that are more than, say, 100 hundreds years old?
Trashing the old, or tearing it down because it is old, or because of cost alone, ultimately means a country looses its heritage and any sense of historical context.
Freedom of speech and thought gives you the right to disagree of course!
