This week’s conversion is a parallel to last week’s, but this time on a Navis Scott class DD. Like the V/Ws, they were converted to a bewildering variety of escort configurations, with practically no two alike. So this was kind of fun to research and execute as well. The conversion involved:
- Removing the 4.7” mounts from amidships and on the quarterdeck and sanding everything smooth.
- Removing the rangefinder and searchlight from the bridge top, and replacing them with a Type 271 radar made from metal dowel stock.
- Adding a 4” open mount in X position. The gun was lifted off a scrapped plastic kit.
- Making an AA platform like last week’s to go in where the amidships 4.7” mount had been, with 20mm singles again represented by plastic dowel.
- Removing the thick torpedo derricks in the waist and replacing them with four depth charge throwers made in a similar fashion to last week’s conversion. Also adding depth charge racks, the same as last week.
- Adding minor details like boat davits.
She also joined the “fast wing” of the Neptun escort group for most of the 80s and 90s. So when the “N” version of Scott comes out from Navis and you already have the old one, you know what to do!
Best to all.
