I have a few links on my old blog here animeksmodels Blog, It may help you a bit, the theory is the same for small ships. I now use a homemade lightbox, you nned to choose the tulip (Macro) on your camera (of course if you're digital) and be at 1 to 4 inch of the subjet with good light like in my exeples.
