This exchange has cleared up a lot of things for me...thanks for the information. I was quite ignorant of the history of the hobby when I was buying these, but did suspect they were copies of other things...had no idea what they were.
But now that I am re-united with my collection and the Metal Miniatures list, the information prompted me to do a thorough inventory of what is on the bottom of my MM's bought back in the 70s. With regard to Framburg, there are three exceptions in my collection where the full "H.A. Framburg & Co Chicago" inscription is present, together with the name of the ship. They are:
Town Class British DD
Hunt Class (Third Group)
Hunt Class (Fourth Group)
All the others (about 25 or so) are recgonizably copies from different makers with the bottom either scraped totally clean or the maker obscured and the ship name remaining as inscribed, apparently as by the original maker.
