Like everyone else, I was very disappointed. I was not there but watched on TV and thought the announcers were very fair to ISU but eventually they were left with nothing to say except accolades to the Bulldogs.
Butler made ISU look a step or two slower at every position. And while they did make some midrange jump shots, they also missed quite a few open shots but pounded the boards repeatedly until scoring, which brings me to my main point:
I have been a big Carl Richard fan since I first saw him his freshman season. I am always amazed (and frustrated) at the other board's repeated criticism of Carl: not enough points, not enough rebounds, not a leader, does not defend well enough etc. They are watching a different game and player than I am.
I feel he was the one player we could not afford to have out of the lineup in a big game. He brings the toughness, defense and rebounding to the lineup that really can not be replaced by anyone else. I think his absence just put the whole team out of rhythm, seriously weakened the rebounding balance and add Butler's defense.
Might not have won with Carl in the lineup, but I think it would have been a lot closer.
