Frustrating loss, to be sure. But not typical in any way I can think of. If you're talking about recent years, we have now lost 34 games in the last 3 years. We have led at halftime in only 6 of those. (Minnesota is the other example from this year and Evansville twice last year). When we have lost, it has been far more common that we have fallen far behind early and then made a comeback at some point, only to fall short. (Drake and UNI in the last two weeks are the most recent examples).
If we're talking typical, it has been far more common for us to fall behind early and then come back and win rather than start hot and fall to pieces. In the MVC tournament alone, we got behind by 7-0 (or worse) in all three games and won.
Poor shot selection, missed free throws down the stretch, and our inability to take advantage of their missing center lost the game today. Missouri State's good. I saw them take Creighton apart at Qwest Center in person a week ago, a team that is still ranked in the top 25. Weems scored 31 on McDermott that night and Carl held him to 14 tonight in a heroic effort.
Should have won the game. But I have to think we played better today then when we were behind 16-2 to Drake or 13-3 to UNI. Those are the typical ways that we start the game when we lose.
..and when you are 10-5, a the result of a typical game is a win.
