Walker was tremendous. The coaches obviously identified that he and Martin could maneuver the WSU post players into position for that baby jump hook and wow was it ever effective. Martin was 2 for 2 with 2 blocks in 9 minutes. Stars to coaches and players for plan and execution.
Odum was generally his normal self. A couple of charging fouls hurt and the dribble off of his foot could have been disastrous, but those are a few sprinkled raindrops out of a clear sky of Sycamore Blue excellence.
Across the board it was a very nice team win. Printy nailed a 3 big shots; Carter was excellent defensively and also made a couple big shots.
Lathan made a couple of those maddening plays but that blocked shot/recovery out near the FT line with a 6 pt lead and 2+ min to play was an incredibly important/athletic play.
While Richard did not score, he led the team with 7 boards. I never underestimate Richard's contributions to this team.
Printy hit three key 3's in the 2nd half, one of which came off of the dribble which I loved. On the defensive end, his court awareness was outstanding. His rotations down to cover the weak side and also on the strong side guards kept WSU from establishing an offensive flow.
McWhorter got 12 minutes and was again solid defensively but it was his flawless handling of the WSU pressure at the point while Odum rode the bench with 4 fouls that was critical to maintaining 1/2 of the lead for a few minutes.
Kelly's appearance was not productive in terms of points but it seemed that his physical presence and commitment was a positive effect overall in his limited minutes.
RJ made that critical short jumper from the side to maintain the lead in the closing minutes. I would like to see him get a few more shots, especially when he is drawing a less mobile big guy away from the bucket.
I am wondering if this is the first time a team has made the championship game by defeating two teams that had defeated it during the regular season. Seems like a very unlikely scenario.
