I just wrote this on the other board and figured I would share it here, since this is where I usually hang out:
It had been three years since our last victory. But there was truly a sense of optimism all day. I had been confident against Quincy as well but it didn't seem to help, but I knew the desire was there. Just not the talent at that point in time.
I sat at the game with an ol' frat brother who son was a senior on the football squad who had endured all these losses. His look said it all. This was t e n s e. Losing has been tough for the parents, the fans, for the alumni, and the coaches for sure, but nobody knows how tough it has been on the players. The jabs, the teasing, the seeming lack of support, the ridiculous rumors about dropping football were never-ending. But Saturday, it was the player's day. They hung in there, they didn't quit, and ultimately, they pulled it out. Many of us had serious tears in our eyes when that game ended. I am not sure I have ever heard that stadium any louder than it was on Saturday and I was a cheerleader in front of 19,500 at ISU Homecoming in 1971 so I know what loud can be out there.
It was a very special weekend at Indiana State. Record numbers of participation in tent city, beautiful weather, a rambunctious crowd at the Bally, but the weekend goes to those players who have put up with so much in the past few years. To #45, you are my hero, because you have stuck it out for FOUR YEARS playing football at ISU and to you and your teammates, my hat's off to all of you. Congratulations on your perseverance. You deserved that in so many ways. Enjoy the moment.
