I think much of the conversation about realignments has stemmed from Joe Paterno's hopes that the Big 10(11) would add the 12th team to their lineup, primarily because it would allow the Big 10 to add a lucrative Championship game to it's lineup and help diminish the 6 weeks of "lagtime" between the end of league play and the bowl games.
There is no way the Big East will ever eliminate the non-football schools. They will just continue to handle them the way they currently are.
I suppose that it makes good sense to have 12 teams in a conference but I seriously doubt that the NCAA will ever dictate such a requirement. It seems likely that conferences will continually tweak their membership as they have since conferences were formed and although St. Louis has been rumored to be looking around (including the MVC), the A-10 probably isn't a bad spot for them, as it might be for Butler. BU would be a great asset to the MVC as well but I don't think that move is forthcoming. As we all know, these things can change overnight!
