State Farm MVC Pitcher of the Week
Darcy Wood, Indiana State
In two appearances this past weekend against league-leading Creighton, senior Darcy Wood pitched two complete games, striking out a combined 27 hitters to become the new Missouri Valley Conference all-time leader in strikeouts. The standout pitcher from Greenwood, Ind., has fanned a total of 933 batters in her career, surpassing now second-place Tammy Nielsen from Creighton who struck out 914 from 2003-05. In her first start against Creighton, Wood struck out 17 of the 33 batters she faced despite a 4-2 losing effort in which the Bluejays scored four unearned runs. 17 Ks in a single game is the most this season for any other MVC pitcher. In the series finale between Indiana State and Creighton, Wood fanned an additional 10 batters, allowed just three hits, walked one, and tossed a shutout to lead the Sycamores to a 1-0 shutout victory against the first-place Bluejays. Wood’s 145 punchouts thus far in the 2009 season ranks her second in the MVC. She currently leads the conference in strikeouts per game averaging 9.12 per contest.
