Posted by Bill F As regards what to expect during a phlebotomy, it typically goes like this. 1) A med tech will record your vitals: pulse, bp, temp, weight etc. That’s about it for a routine phlebotomy. Now some people do have difficulties, but go in with a positive attitude. Tell the med techs it is your first time so they will explain what’s what. Good luck.

Martina - - Good to hear they are going a genetic test. As Darren pointed out, that will help to identify your particular circumstances.
2) They will also record you medical history and ask you some rather personal life style questions to ensure the safety of the blood supply if your blood is to be used reused.
3) They will give you a pin prick in your ear lobe or finger and take a smidgeon of blood in a small tube to test your hemoglobin
4) They will escort you to a comfy chair or table, put a blood pressure cuff or rubber tube snuggly around your arm just above your elbow, slap or rub your arm opposite your elbow a few times to raise a vein, mark the spot , apply antiseptic to the area, then insert a needle attached by a flexible tube to a bottle or bag. Sometimes it hurts a little for a moment, sometimes hardly at all.
5) Your blood will begin to flow into the bag or bottle and you will be advised to squeeze a rubber ball every ten seconds or so.
6) Typically, in about 5-7 minutes a unit (500 cc) of blood will have been removed.
7) They will remove the needle, have you hold your arm upright for a couple of minutes, then apply a bandage.
8) You’ll be told to relax for 5 minutes or so, then be directed or escorted to the canteen for a smack and drink.
9) You’ll be directed to avoid strenuous exercise for the rest of the day and will probably be given instructions on what to do if any problems arise.
