I have a friend with hemochromatosis who recently started smoking. I know that smoking increases iron levels in the blood but don't know how that process works or if anyone might know of any scientific papers / sites that address this issue. I found a couple of papers - one, "Influence of cigarette smoking on crocidolite-induced ferritin release by human alveolar macrophages" that was in relation to asbestos and two, "Cadmium accumulation and detoxification by alveolar macrophages of cigarette smokers" that talked about the increase in cadmium but not iron - that talked about some things but not the direct correlation between cigarette smoking and increased iron. Any help? Thanks in advance!
