A message to H & W Zac Hond re penalty stroke given by BromBeck umpire 2 minutes from end of game on 8 March against BromBeck 4s. I refer you to Hockey rule 9.7 which states
Players must not play the ball with any part of the stick when the ball is above shoulder height except that defenders are permitted to use the stick to stop or deflect a shot at goal at any height.
When saving a shot at goal, a defender must not be penalised if their stick is not motionless or is travelling towards the ball while attempting to stop or deflect the shot. Only if the ball is genuinely hit while above shoulder height and a goal is prevented should a penalty stroke be awarded.
As the Umpire of note I would state that my decision was absolutely correct. A tough call but a correct one. Woody (I am note sure whether senior the bald one or junior the handsome one please note) as we umpired the 3s together later that day and he made a tough call (and correctly in my opinion) on a short corner against H & W which lead to a goal.
