you can specify to seach for only "free" articles - but getting all of them at least lets you know the source, then you might be able to find them through other channels
advanced search will let you specify a bunch of things
http://news.google.com/archivesearch/advanced_search?q=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en
here are their tips for advanced archive searches
http://news.google.com/archivesearch/advanced_search?q=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en
Here's a result for free articles using only "hurricane bob"
http://news.google.com/archivesearch?as_q=hurricane+bob&num=100&hl=en&btnG=Search+Archives&as_epq=&as_oq=&as_eq=&as_user_ldate=&as_user_hdate=&lr=&as_src=&as_price=p1&as_scoring=
also same criteria, "hurricane gloria"
http://news.google.com/archivesearch?as_q=hurricane+gloria&num=100&hl=en&btnG=Search+Archives&as_epq=&as_oq=&as_eq=&as_user_ldate=&as_user_hdate=&lr=&as_src=&as_price=p1&as_scoring=
if you know anyone with access, LexisNexis searches are powerhouses, or so I've been told http://www.lexisnexis.com/us/lnacademic/
hope this helps !
