this is how it's stated in the article:
"Below the summit, however, Waythomas and others discovered that heat from the volcano has already melted or evaporated away about one-fifth of the Drift Glacier. That's nearly commensurate with the "cubic kilometer ... about one-fourth of the glacier" that was lost to melting 20 years ago, Waythomas said."
So it sounds to me that they are saying the 1/5 of the glacier that they estimate to be melted this go-round is similar to what was melted during the last eruptin (lasting 4 months)
Keep in mind that this was their assessment from only a flyover - I don't think they've had a chance to really inspect anything since last night's & today's eruptions.
That might not take into account the thickness of the glacier each time, etc... "quick science"
Here's the latest report:
2009-03-28 15:25:57
Seismicity over the last 30 minutes has gradually increasing on several stations.
Snow and ash are currently obscuring web camera views of the volcano from AVO's hut camera.

: How much of the glacier melted during the 89
: eruption?

:
: there's more night photos at AVO, awesome
: photography...
:
: it's already melted quite about 1/5th of the
: glacier, per the ADN story & less than 1
: wk into the eruptions - this one's going to
: be one for the record books I think - hope
: the dikes at the drift river terminal hold

: Very cool!!
:
: I was reading the ash samples showed a
: pumice structure which indicate that it was
: generated by fresh lava at the surface.
:
: That indicates a dome building and
: collapsing process will most likely happen
: for a while; hence, the eruptions will occur
: for some time.
