I agree with the "MAKE A LAST STAND" idea but then again which city would you pick to make that stand? it couldn't be Zagreb because of its economic, political etc...importance, it couldn't be Split for its historical and cultural importance...what would it be??? the rest(Bosna) was already half in the hands of the communists(maybe Sarajevo but then again its too important) and we all know the allies bombed Zadar with no second thoughts. But its true always better to go down fighting than to run but I guess his thinking was live to fight another day? but you are right that city and Croatians in general would've been known as hero(s)and honourable fighters not only being the last axis forces to submit(which we were the last) but the only ones to continue fighting but you know what with our small population imagine if all the allies teamed up on us it would cause more deaths for a good deal of people which some didnt even support the Ustase(thats the problem we werent united back then in political ways)and even more Croatians would have blamed the Ustase(gle kako oni nama kopaju jos dublju jamu)who knows... the problem with a good deal of Croatians is that they are too pacifist(Macek for instance) not saying its a bad thing all the time but when going up against invaders like the Serbs you have to make a stand mentaly and physically.
But the greatest proof of why Pavelic(Ustase) maybe should've hunkered down and fought it out till the end in a built up city with hand to hand combat happened in 91! VUKOVAR! 3 months and only 1500-1800 heroes defended this one city on the border with Serbia against tanks, planes and 60 000 jna and cetniks blood thirsty assholes and succeeded !!!!! with little or no military experience and with almost no heavy artilery(I've read this book i forgot what it was called but it was about the battle for Vukovar and it was very rationally written with Vukovar veterans telling thier stories(in Croatian). I recomend everyone read it)so imagine if only 1500 lightly armed civilians almost defended this city which was so poorly positioned right next to Serbia, what 100 000 men(with 4 years of ww2 experience already could do while fighting for thier existence and thier countries....we can only think what if now though.
