75.105.41.179From today's fecal, it was determinded that El has some sort of parasite.. so is on some meds & probiotics.
She's gained 4lbs since monday's visit. (!).
Her diet will also include:
pumpkin (which I was already giving her)
fish oil
oatmeal
sweet potato
pinch of ginger
Geesh.. she's going to be eating better than we are! (jk)
Anyway, we're hopeful that the tiny 'hound from hell' is on her way to recovery. (since she's had the runs, she's been sleeping more than usual.. which had me worried) - Glad you've got the problem figured out....

our German Shepherd had a very delicate stomach and still does we found if we introduced anything new into his system pudding ...to water and it took a few days to get him back on track..
WE found he would even go off eating if we gave him something new something as simple as a little piece of meat I mean LITTLE would cause his delicate system to go off.. Even now at a year he is still very delicate tummy. - Re: Puppy poop question..

75.105.32.38You've hit on something that is very important. Find what works and stick with it. With this pup, we haven't found what works for her yet.
I am always amazed at how people are always changing feed for their animals. My gelding has been on the same feed for 12 years. I don't change it because it works prefectly for him. It may not work for another horse but it works for him. I don't follow the latest and greatest fads. I learned, a long time ago, from one of the founders of AQHA, this feeding regiment. It makes life so much easier once you figure it out. - oh

I just made an appt for her w/the vet. .. 3:30pm.
Ron's been hounding me about not changing ANYTHING w/her food... I'd been mixing a small amt of beef/fat/pumpkin in with her kibble. .. but we wanted to get her off Pedigree Puppy and onto a better Lamb/Rice food. .. so for the last few days, I'd been slowly introducing the new kibble (which she loves).. Since the vet said that the meat isn't necessary - just a good kibble will do.. she *did* say that the raw pumpkin was a good idea. (it helps regulate both diarrhea as well as constipation).
.. anyway... I guess we'll just stick w/kibble and a small amt of pumpkin from now on. .. and no rawhide bones. - Ron might be on to something....

149.136.17.253Just feed kibble, it should be a complete feed. One of my Chessies had to be on Lamb & rice dog food because of loose stools. He ate Nutro's Natural Choice Lamb and Rice for 10 years (puppy, then adult). Last year I switched to Pedigree because of $$. But he is doing great on the pedigree, he must have outgrown his allergies. - I agree

67.142.130.24I keep all our dogs and cats on kibble... we buy the Costco brand and stay away from corn based kibble. The corn tends to give them sloppy fecals and Pedigree is high in corn. - Re: Ron might be on to something....

75.105.32.52Only problem I have with Pedigree is the corn in it. Our older dogs do fine on it though.
As for horses........A friend of mine and I had a training barn with 30 Saddlebreds in training. Most were Racking Horses. He was the trainer, I handled some but did most of the grunt work. We were having a problem with some of the horse and we were sitting in the tackroom/office trying to figure it out. The cutting trainer from up the road came in and joined the conversation. This was the old AQHA guy. He basically said that we had some of the best fed horses in the country but it was that, that was the problem. We tried his feeding method and over time, fed all the horses the same. The only thing that changed from horse to horse was the amount of feed. All horses came around, great looking coats and fit as hell. The feed? Oats and Barley...that's it. Hay of course went with it. Oats for weight, Barley for energy. If the horse need more weight....add more oats. If the horse was working harder and needed more energy....add more barley. You have to be careful they don't founder but you figure that out. If you wanted more shine on a show horse, simply take the horse, about an hour before the show, put them on a lunge line and work up a swet. Then wash them with ONLY water, then put them back on the lunge line and let them dry, then take a face brush and brush them down with a lot of pressure on the brush. This brings up all the oil. They shined like you wouldn't believe. People always asked how we got the shine but wouldn't believe us.
By the way....we cut our feed bill in half. - Did the vet run a fecal?

75.105.41.179.. but I don't know if she checked for anything other than worms. The exam report said "Fecal Float" .. w/ a note about worms. .. nothing else.
.. anyway, the office will be open soon.. guess I'll double check w/Ron about the viscosity of her poo.. (since the Pepto).. and then call the office.
That's encouraging when you say it can be easily treated if it's coccidia. (hopefully, that's *all* it is) (?)
