We realized that here, in these foothills is "Home". I also needed to be closer to family. My dad died while we were in CO. I needed to be closer to help out my mom when needed. .. I missed the trees that we have here. I missed the hills and pastures. I missed the weather. I hated the lightening and the unrelenting WIND. We did SO MUCH maintenance on that place, that it should have been relatively easy for the new owners. I didn't care much for living in a 'neighborhood' either. The kids along Tennessee were deliquents that were cruel to animals. (our animals!). but they were just jerks overall. One day when we had a family gathering (family from TX, OK & CA) visiting, they drove by and threw a glass bottle - shattered it - in the driveway. Ron jumped into the truck and followed them home. .. told them that he now knows where they live and will kick their butts or call the police if it ever happens again. I guess it scared the begeezes out of them - that someone would actually confront them - and they never did it again. .. However, trashing the mailbox was their next activity, until Ron buried metal posts on each side of it. I guess it may have hurt the first time they hit a post with a baseball bat. That stopped that activity. Then, they started throwing plastic bottles half filled with gravel on top of the shedrow roof. at around 3am in the morning.. It would freak out the horses. Once, when we'd gone to town, they did it in the afternoon.. making some of the horses crash through the gates. It's a miracle they didn't get hurt or broken. Ron took one of the bottles over to one kid's house and talked with the parent. (the kids were asleep.. and the parent thanked Ron for NOT calling the police on them) We *did* call the police on July 4th though - at one arrogant braggart kid's "suggestion".. LOL. Not only was everything tinder dry, but it was windy.. and their bottle rockets were not only freaking out our horses (because they were about 10' away).. but their damned rockets were landing on our property! One 'bully' kid thought he could intimidate Ron. .. wrong. Anyway, it was a 'no fireworks' year.. and the policeman set the kid straight. From what I understand, the police were familiar with this particular group of kids. Then, we found glass beer bottles in Playmate's paddock... I've mentioned that before. .. where they threw them at her when we'd left her out over night. Nice kids, eh? Hopefully, they've all moved on or are in prison by now. We had that front gate made because mules from the east end of High St. kept getting loose and ended up in our yard. .. and also, it's just good to have in case any of our horses ever got loose (they didn't).. but it keeps them from getting out on the road. At any rate, coming from the foothills, CO was too desert, too windy, too baren (no trees) and just didn't feel like home. When you're trying to run a business, it was also very difficult to find the same level of professional services required. However, one of the services, Peak Printing on 9th street, I've got to say, is one of the best in the business. We still use them from time to time. Nice people t'boot. We were there 5 years.. almost to the day. So, we gave it a chance. .. but like I said, we realized that this is 'home'. It's hard to believe that we've been back here almost 9 years.(in Jan). .. We STILL, to this day, look around and appreciate how beautiful it is here. .. so, like 'Dorothy' sez, clicking her ruby slippers, "there's no place like home." .. LOL .. but we also know that what feels like "Home" is different for everyone.
