99.197.135.100Just to see if they can. I do it will Nellie because she is a driving horse and usually any pressure on a collar means pull. She is making a good distinction between the riding and pulling though, getting nice and light for her people. She is fun 
Dodger could probably back up if I tugged on his mane. Doesn't take much to ask him to back or turn but he needs to get moving (in a relaxed manner) a little quicker. He would probably be more than fine for most people but we're perfectionists around here
I'm not actually using leg to ask him to go, I'd rather just think "go" and get a nice canter depart if I need it.
Another reason to ask them with something other than the bit is to try to preserve the lightness there, I would rather not have to pick up on the bit if I can. If I want to stop, I give a little wiggle in the saddle and they stop, no pulling needed for that. - Thanks for the explaination

67.142.130.14I try to do that with my horses, too. They all stop using seat and leg first, the bit is just for back up if needed. Of course, when riding to hounds on Cakes all bets were off, LOL!
When I get a chance to get back in the saddle I am going to try that on Robo Cop. I don't bother with breast collars, even on the steep trails, but I could use a piece of baling twine looped around the base of his neck in the arena. He's very smart and actually quite lazy - stopping is a good reward for him

You'll probably get snow within the next few days. (again). It's snowing in the mountains today along hwy 50. .. headed your way.
I need to find a teen age girl who wants to ride three of mine. *sigh*.
If you didn't live in Colorado, I'd probably give you a few horses.. LOL - shhhhh

lol, I need to ride my own horses too, they get so ticked off that we're spending time with these outsiders. I don't get to ride as much, or rather as long as I would like to. If Nellie would go faster she could keep up with the truck. I don't really want to take Dodger out alone too far from our place since there is no cell phone reception. Maybe I will string a few ponies together and head out.
