very cozy and dry inside with the fire going. No rain comes in. It will stay anywhere from 80 degrees or more in dead of winter. Creasote biulds up on t he inside and makes the inside waterproof. Too bad It doesn't get on the outside as that is the part that is exspoded to rain and weather. I had mine up 24/7 and it lasted about 5 years. The Native Am.'s used to put hides , layer after layer on t he floor and it kept the feeties warm. You dont' need a coat on in there with the fire going in t he winter. I ahve awaken to snow falling on me from the smoke hole, i can s ee the moon a nd stars from the smoke hole. Its just too great for words! I can tell you very little detail of why the rain doesn't come inside. I made my first tipi, I'd love to make another one. I even cut my own poles for it. I hope you get a chance to spend the night in one Britt! It is awesome!
