The Clintons also had the whole democratic party, very rich backers and most of the media behind them. It was not fashionable to sit back quietly and hope that it would all come out good in the end.
Palin has had no support from the media and was dumped by the Republican party. I don't think the good old boys liked having a woman in that position... wouldn't have mattered who the woman was. So... they kept quiet and let things go as it did. And now they sit and say... oh see, she wasn't experienced, or whatever. I don't think the GOP was ever behind her. If they had been, they wouldn't have sat back and watched the show.
