It looks more like a gopher snake which are more similar to rattlesnakes. When I was a toddler I went up and touched one and my mom nearly had a heart attack because she thought it was a rattle snake. Gopher snakes get a lot larger than garter snakes

Here is one of my friend's resident bull snakes, they are quite large and sometimes slither right between your feet when you are standing around talking. They call her "Saint"
