Most of you probably remember that Joe saved a bunch (over 30 I believe) of horses from Mexican rodeos. That was a few months back and he found homes for a lot of them, even though they were in horrible shape. Most were thin, covered with scars and wounds, and terrified of people.
One very emaciated older mare was put out in one of the fields with some other horses. Joe posted a few days later that when he went out to feed in the morning the mare had just given birth to a little filly. No one even suspected she was in foal because she was so skinny, and Joe had to carefully guide the mare and foal out of the herd to the safety of one of his pens.
Joe needed to find a safe home for the mare and foal. The mare was nearly on death's door and was about a body condition score of 1. Fortunately, some wonderful clients of mine stopped by a couple of days later to look for a horse for their niece and agreed to take the mare and filly.
The mare and filly got moved to their ranch and put on a beautiful green pasture. I stopped by a day later to trim horses and took some photos. The filly by then was about 6 days old. The mare barely had the strength to stand for the foal to nurse and made only feeble attempts to be protective. Below are some of the photos I took that day (8/12)
This was the mare:
2 months later (10/6)
Look at the filly and how much she has grown!
If you notice that the mare's color has changed to a deeper shade of red, I donated a bag of California Trace minerals for her and the baby when they first arrived
They have been on the supplement ever since. The mare is very friendly and loves attention. She's actually put together very nicely and I wouldn't be surprised if she is also well trained.
