little horses that we owned was a fiery little QH/Arab Cross we named Tiny Dancer...
After she left us she went on to become a winning barrel racer and we got thanked often year after year by her new owner, for selling her to them. They were a match made in Heaven, it seems.
That being said, we originally found her languishing away alone in a field... she had been neglected for a year or more and we got her for a song. She was easy to fall in love with and a true redhead disposition. You don't need to breed them to love them. If I wanted any type of foal... Arab, Draft, foundation quarter horse, etc.... I'd go find one who has safely made it on the ground already... save myself and my family a ton of money and still have all the traits that good horses come with. There are SO many to choose from.
But, Britt, I remember what it was like to be young and romanticize about my horse. I bred a couple of mine way back when. I have a couple of really nice mares now with my favorite bloodlines, "the look" I love, and all that... and the thought still crosses my mind once in a great while as an old habit to breed them... but I'm older and wiser now, and you know what else, this economy we're in is gonna get a whole lot worse before it gets better. You can't do the things that are being done and have it come out okay. You can prop it up and lie to the people, but that doesn't fix it.
Think about this... you're a busy Mom with a busy mind... try being "in the now" more and enjoy each moment with your horses and kids that you can grab... learn to breathe, save your money for those babies... and don't risk killing your husband's enthusiasm for you finally getting to have horses, too. He's working hard to keep you all going. Horses add up and they add up fast and a pregnant mare is a huge uncertainty. Save some $$ so you can rest more assured that the family of animals and horses you have now will be more secure in the future, and if things do crash, it will be one less horse you have to get rid of the hard way. It will be a good example for the kids, too, to see that Mommy has wisdom and restraint. I wish more of us did!
Said with xoxo. Stupid is as stupid does and I've been stupid and so I know what I'm talking about, hehe.
