Just to see if they can. I do it will Nellie because she is a driving horse and usually any pressure on a collar means pull. She is making a good distinction between the riding and pulling though, getting nice and light for her people. She is fun
Dodger could probably back up if I tugged on his mane. Doesn't take much to ask him to back or turn but he needs to get moving (in a relaxed manner) a little quicker. He would probably be more than fine for most people but we're perfectionists around here
I'm not actually using leg to ask him to go, I'd rather just think "go" and get a nice canter depart if I need it.
Another reason to ask them with something other than the bit is to try to preserve the lightness there, I would rather not have to pick up on the bit if I can. If I want to stop, I give a little wiggle in the saddle and they stop, no pulling needed for that.
