Posted by dimitrios HOLOCAUST - "Primal" NEAT might be officially dead and buried, although, Sanctuary procceds to reissue various albums, randomly, one might say. but there is little hope that they might actually keep the label going signing old-style bands. Anyhow, one time Tygers singer Jess Cox - kept the little subordinate Edgy from being swallowed up too and he retained a couple of the highest profile artists on it's roster in Blitzkrieg and Holocaust. The first of the afformentioned delivered a masterful album last year, and now it's the time for HOLOCAUST to deliver. And boy do they deliver or what! Having heard the Friday the 13th demos - i was expecting a rather good selection of songs, with mediocre production.WRONG. The PRIMAL beast is actually much heavier. a lot more raw and angry than those demos. It's amazingly the first ex-NEAT act to have a decent production in years !!! It's not without it's faults but at least it's clean and loud. If this album was proffesionally produced in some fancy studio - it would deliver your guts on a plate - after listeening to it just once. Do your self a favor and seek this one out. It's well worth it. 4,5/6

Primal begins with a killer little guitar theme - that repeats itself throughout the song. Imagine the best elements of BLACK SABBATH, METALLICA and HOLOCAUST, rolled into one dealdy stick of dynamite, with the fuse lit, while you hold it.Boom! John sings in a very weird way, part himself, part jon oliva on drugs, part james hetfield of old, with a cold (excuse the pun). It takes a bit to get used to, but it's ok after a couple of listens. Black box - has a vortex like quality about it, i got a feeling of being swallowd into a massive - well vortex - a kind of towering - well of sound of sorts - you got to listen to it to understand what i mean, Hell on earth is weird. It begins a bit like a driftaway rocker, gets really gritty and then softens and hardens again in succession. A case of failed dynamics. With proper production and a tad faster tempo i guess i would have liked this better. The solos work to great effect. They might be not be as memorable as say an iron maiden guitar duel, but they are imaginative and very well put. Transcendence is again, rockier, but here the chorus lifts the song up, simple, slightly more up tempo very good transition to the exceptional Fools (Bring on the light). It begins at a frantic pace, with some really tongue in cheek lyrics, and a melodic refrrain saves the day, along the way.Nice. Along with it you get a death metal grunt somewhere in there ??? Preety twisted, innit ? It's preety good too. Made righterous, is weird, treading on MEGADETH territory in places, nice riff, but it's rather passable in my opinion. Interesting lyrics too, they do have an ironic (?) twist about them or it might just be my perception. I would like to ask John about their true meaning. It's your Dream, could have been a metallica tune, at least the riff and rythmic part of the song sounds that way. Preety interesting song, weird guitar leads in there, in the middle. They colonized, i already knew this one from the demos. Here it's beafened up. As is Colossus, another heavy, sinister rythmic track, that oblidges you to follow it's hypnotical buzzsaw riff. Lost horizons, is preety much simillar, a rather weird esoteric, heavy but yet sad and downbeat way to end the album in a rather pessimistic way...
Hm, in my hands i have a release, that's worth far more attention, than it will ever get. There's no marketeer to push this down peoples throats, to tell them how cool it is. If it is at all. I think it's preety uncool. It's a genuinly quite angry record, with meaningful lyrics, open to more than one interpretations, quality heavy compositions and a production that does it justice. But i can hardly see how the nu-kids on the block might pick it up. Which is a shame.
And one more thingy. Personally I get pissed off by the fact that the largetst stab at fame of most of the old school nwobhm like good old HOLO, is allways gonna be that mr pants drummer for metallica, mr Larse Ul-rich has included their songs on that ages old nwobhm compilation. So what, rummor has it that the man has sold his nwobhm collection anyway. Too old to RnR i guess. Anyway, i d' like to point out that PRIMAL makes their patron's latest and worst ever album ST.ANGER sound like Britney ####in Spears. Or sth. Not that i think that Ms Spears is that bad.
Well Sad But True for Metallica, that some ahem, "Old farts" can fart one LOUDER.
