Posted by Nick on 8/31/2002, 8:31 am Tri-West's Sam Butler (5'9 160 '03) returned the opening kick-off to the Eagles' 41 yard line and 4 rushes later the Bruins were hitting paydirt at the 10:00 mark of the first quarter with Zach Wiles (6'0 200 '03), who rushed 3 times for 25 yards on the drive. South Putnam responded with a 62-yard drive led by Ames and Flora to tie it up. Both teams struggled the next two possessions, then Tri-West had consecutive possessions one going 8 plays for 82 yards and the other 4 plays for 73 yards both resulting in touchdowns. Then controversy hit an already penalty flag-laden half with 45 seconds to go on fourth down and long as Tri-West was whistled for pass interference at the Eagles' 23-yard line. Three plays later, South Putnam was in the endzone cutting the lead to 21-14. Butler returned the kick-off to South Putnam's 15-yard line, but could not get in the end zone as time expired. Both teams erred several times in the second half after both teams scored early touchdowns making it 28-20 in favor of Tri-West. It was Tri-West's Adam Quilter (5'10 150 '05) making an interception at the Eagles' 36-yard line that proved the difference maker as the Bruins rumbled to the endzone in a hurry at the 1:48 mark of the third quarter giving them a 34-20 cushion. Flora finished with an unofficial 14 carries for 116 yards, Ames displayed some good passing accuracy, Tri-West quarterback T.J. Siple (5'11 160 '04) showed good leadership and ability and hit fellow junior Cameron Alexander (6'0 155) for large gains twice during the game-clinching drive.
