interfacing a GSM mobile phone

How can a picaxe be connected to the port of a GSM mobile phone? The PICAXE has to send out AT commands to the phone and receive answers back. E.g. for sending a SMS message. I want to avoid the use of a serial data cable used for connection between a PC and mobile phone, because of the TTL RS232 level difference. I am looking for a straight connection.
