Posted by Govanus It was available for free I think and could be made to work on the majority of the large posix unix family like Lunix and Mac os X there may be a port by now to other less useful platforms like windows and MS-DOS.

Just a realy quick message as I surf by : Just read on one of your pages about testcards about trying to avoid artifacts dueing jpeg compresion.
When I was U@ ni there was a good program called XV that ran on our Sparcstations (solaris unix from Sun microsystems) with aprox 2500x2100ish resolution screens, in the electronics lab.
The program had a lot of useful image processing features inculdeing a "rotary dial" of image quality during jpeg compresion down to 1% (for seriously limited transmision systems)!
It was being wrote and developed at the time when the jpeg standard was being reseached and formalised so had the code for the meny competeing algorithiums optermised to different levels of reduction.
