A BMI of 25 isn't very good. A recent report on arthritis showed that, at this level of weight, the body's attempts to produce cartilege are defeated by the friction caused by excess weight. Anyone at risk of arthritis is therefore better off at a lower weight. Most cultures around the world view a BMI of 18-21 as being indicative of 'beauty' which certainly makes sense. I work in a diabetes unit and those patients with a high BMI not only fail to control their diabetes as well as slimmer patients; they are also likely to show signs of heart disease. I would be very interested to know what average BMI is in Japan, where the incidence of diabetes is very low.
