Why is there such a shortage of male dancers in dance classes and societies, etc. in Britain and is there a similar problem in other Western countries? Surely this hasn't always been the case. Jane Austen makes no mention of there being a shortage of men at dances; nor did Playford comment on any imbalance of the sexes in his day. What is the cause and how can dance clubs/societies/classes increase the number of men attending events?
