Hi I wish to corect details on first ever carboot in the world, they did not start in 1980s,the following have all been comfirm by goverment and unversitys,
and newpapers world wide, plus tv interveiws
I started them in September 1975,
at whitley park school Reading berkshire,
this came about after the school ask me to organise event to raise funds,so I ran ad in the local paper to come along to a fleamarket on 1st saturday of Sept 1975,
But was stopped by Reading council who hold the Royal Charter Market rights,
One tuesday on my rip back from north I stopped off at caversham bridge to have cuppa, when I notice this fishing man get up from water edge and at his car took out rod and place for ale on it and lefted it on his car boot.
I returned to the school and when I came up after three hours talks and thinking with Head master Jim Ingram came up with the idea of carboots sales ,I was informed but Head master I needed locking up.this being a mad idea,
I put this to the council whom also told me I was mad to use this idea,
but gave the go ahead,On the first sale held On last saturday of September 1975.
I had 143 cars selling with 3400 buyers from Berkshire turn out,
the following two weeks I had the councilors and Reading MPS running thier own stalls for Reading charitys,
Today I still run the Humdingers Winter Indoor carbooters table top sales on sunday from 1pm at Ryeish Green Leisure centre Spencers Wood Reading.
Happy Booting from Ray.
