In respect of the PICAXE being a pre-programmed Basic Interpreter, there's the potential of a lack of reliability in the creation of the firmware which has to be used, where errors may have crept in but have not been detected, which compound any reliability issues there may be with the underlying processor hardware. For all manufacturers, I do not think it is so much "reliability" in the sense of likely failure, as not being willing to guarantee operation as documented in every possible situation, simply because it is so hard to test every potential situation.
