What an excellent website; A breath of fresh air after so many 'This is me, this is my dog, this is my grandma . . . ' type sites.
This is the second time I've come across Happy Hippy's site. First it attracted my attention for the film reviews and now for the PicAxe information. I'm about to start a model railway project and am looking to use the PicAxe as a controller for various operations.
HH, your ambient music project intrigues me. Have you read JG Ballard's 'Vermillion Sands' collection? There are many references to Sonic Sculptures in there - machines which react to the personality of the viewer / listener.
Many years ago, when I was just getting started in electonics, I built a device from a (now discontinued) Babani book called a 'burp box'. This was a series of four astable multivibrators, ranging from a very low frequency one to a high audio frequency one. These were loosely cross-coupled to interfere with each other and with adjustment to the pots, would produce a continuous stream of burps, whistles, clicks, hoots and other strange noises. I improved the design of this (mainly by trial and error) and added a couple of LDRs to make it respond to its environment. The circuit and the book are long gone, but I do intend to try and recreate it at some point (if I can work out how the cross-coupling was done) and integrate it into some sort of structure in the garden, probably with temperature sensing as well.
Andy.
