Posted by Hugo Trumpton on November 18, 2005, 9:38 pm, in reply to "Re: The article on parking" My original post refered to the article on this site where the author appeared to be complaining that he had received tickets unfairly. However, the situations he described all pointed the finger at the motorist for being ignorant of the parking regulations. No matter how much you dislike the regulations, they are generally very wellthought out, and to the benefit of the motorist. The sheer volume of traffic on the roads dwarfes that of 20, even 10 years ago. Most household have two cars and increasily, they may have three or four. If you want to live in a fantasy land where there are no Parking Attendants, and no parking restrictions, you would soon see that absolute pandemoneum would break out. As I said before, look to the example of St. Albans. People were cheering when the Attendadnt came back. Its very easy to rip of some poor sod who is doing his job to the best of his ability. The fact is the streets are overcrowded, there is too much traffic in many areas for it to move freely, and the Parking Attendants play a vittle role is keeping traffic flowing and ensuring people park safely and with respect to other motorists. I suspect that i may be trying to argue the point with people who are more interested in pointing fingers and claiming that I am ignorant of the whole situation, but I have seen this from both sides of the fence. I have worked in parking ticket appeals office, and processed the appeals and subsequent to that, i have also managed a thriving dot com delivery company. When i arrived at the delivery company the drivers were getting several tickets a week. In the first week i sat down with them and said, look, its no good complaining about these tickets, we cant be getting them no more. I told them to park as safely as they could, and to observe all the signage carefully, and advised them that if there was signs of loading, they could park on double yellow lines, but they had to make sure they returned to the vehicle every five minutes. I told them that they were not to take the attitude of "well i've got a delivery to do, so i'm just going to park anywhere". I mean, some of their tickets were for parking in bus stops at 1pm. From that point onwards my fleet of 6 vehicles got 1 ticket in the next 9 months. And that was becasue the driver had parked on a double yellow and then gone to the pub, and came back thinking he could claim he was unloading. And yes I sacked him for gross misconduct, as he drove a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and while on duty. Maybe you guys feel that is unjust too?

Thank you for logical and totally rational response to my lengthy detailed and considered post. For you information, I live on the outskirts of London, within a controlled parking zone, I often have to travel into London, and I feel that the immigration system need a radical and immediate reconstruction from the ground up. I do not see what living around London has to do with it by the way, unless it is only Parking Attendant from the London area that are the problem. I will reiterate that you can not break the law by parking in any way. This was laid down in the 1991 Road Traffic Act. You should recognise that and be grateful for the fact, becasue if it wasnt for that, it would be very easy to pick up a criminal record by parking incorrectly.
