I think what you are describing in the upper abdomen is a diastsis recti (see http://hernia.tripod.com/HerniaInstitute_index.html). This is NOT a hernia and requires no treatment. Your husband likely has a post hernia pain syndrome and should be evaluated by a surgeon with experience in this area. It may be that re-exploration with triple neurectomy may help.
