I have a large epigastric hernia which has grown from about a protrusion of 3 inches to about 7 inches over the course of two years. I made an appointment with Dr Ude at Columbia Presbytarian for open surgery during which she plans to use a mesh. I was told that I should wait 4 weeks before I fly/travel (which i do a lot of for my job) and that full recovery would take 4-6 weeks. I was surprised then, to recently read Dr Goodyear's website about the tension-free technique and how it is possible to return to normal activity in days (and that even with larger, more complex hernias, patients are rarely asked to stay more than a few days in the area). Are all surgeries using mesh considered "tension-free"? I am wondering if there are different techniques involving the use of mesh that would prolong recovery time?
