Only your surgeon can explain what happened. By "preserving nerves" during surgery simply means they were identified and not intentionally injured. These nerves can easily get caught up in the scar as well as the reaction to mesh during the healing process. The risk to these particular nerves is MUCH less during the laparoscopic repair since they are not in the operative field.
